About the Program

Welcome to the launch of the Battle of the Plants! The mission of this program is to engage students in learning and applying academics through hands-on gardening. Our model uses both collaboration and competition with students across the world to build engagement and buy-in.
We build literacy by having students journal their experiences, read and research leveled content, learn robust vocabulary and decoding skills, and write to communicate with their teammates and competitors
Students learn how math skills are applied in a variety of contexts, receive repeated practice opportunities to reach mastery, and work to justify their answers.
Life science skills are a foundation of the program, interwoven with "real" life skills like gardening, cooking, preserving, and crafting.

About the Founder

Picture
Hello! My name is Kristen Jenkins, and I'm the Greenhouse Manager for the Alaska Gateway School District. We have hydroponic gardens, heated and unheated greenhouses, and outdoor beds that supply our district's cafeterias. The schools in our district are in remote Alaska, and each about an hour apart, so I created this program to unite our students and give them the opportunity for hands-on applied learning.
